Back to School… Back to Savings!
The time of year is fast approaching when we start to send our kiddos back to school. It’s an exciting time of year for them filled with anticipation and laced with a bit at nervousness. It is also the time of year when your wallet starts to scream ouch as the price of supplies piles up. Have no fear though, I have a few tips and tricks that can really help your family send your child to school with all the necessities while saving you a bundle of money. By shopping smarter and not frivolously, your little or big ones with have everything at their disposal for a successful year of learning.
Use Coupons: I know I say this all the time, but it is absolutely the best way to start saving your family some serious cash. Many coupons for office supplies come out around this time of year and they equal lots of FREE and cheap items on your school supply list. So far, I have seen coupons that would make for FREE pens, folders, crayons, glue, highlighters, and even notebooks. That sounds like a pretty good start to me and it won’t mean a single penny out of your own pocket. Shop from Home: Start your shopping by using what you already have around your home. This could be extra supplies from last year or even reusing some of the same supplies from the previous year. You could even turn a Tupperware container into a repurposed pencil box or let your child use the hundreds of free business pens you have stashed in the ol’ junk drawer. By starting with what you already have, you’re not only saving money, but teaching your child to be resourceful.
Buy Extra… Save Later: If you see a great sale or can snag an item for free, make sure to grab an extra pack or two. School supplies are at their cheapest right now, so don’t be caught paying the absorbitant price when December hits and your kiddo is need of new erasers or notebooks. Stock piling these extras now will not only save you money, but they will save you an emergency trip to the store for glue when completing that late night science project your child forgot to tell you about. And believe me, that will happen at some point in your child’s school career… Mark my words.
Don’t Take the Kids: Seriosuly, you know what I mean! If you leave the kiddos at home when you shop, you won’t have to see the gleam in their eye as they covet that expensive 3 ring binder featuring the latest pop group that is way out of your price range. You also won’t have to see the pang in their heart when the idea gets shot down due to lack of funds. By not having the little ones in toe, you will avoid dishing out unnecessary cash for any little “extras” they deem necessary for a successful school career. It’s the same principle as not going to the store hungry…
DONATE: If you have the extras to share, please be sure to donate them to your child’s school. Many families can’t even begin to shop for the new school year and a simple donation of pencils and notebooks could really make a HUGE difference. You have no idea what it would mean for a child in need to start the school year off with just a few new supplies. Boosting their spirits and self-confidence can really help them have a successful school year. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just something that lets them know that their education is important and well deserved. Plus, it just feels pretty darn good to help those that are less fortunate!
By following these small and simple tips, you can ensure your family’s budget stays intact and your children well on their way to academic success!
